Dan actually started at CCP if the old policy was set up, so effectively his personalities were, essentially,"put on ice" for a few months since he got ready for them to EVE Echoes ISK undergo CCP's witness protection program and get new identities. However, the policy shifted, meaning he essentially got his personalities back that day. He knew this could be something he'd need to deal with going into his new gig - something he juggled with was how he'd handle the process with his principal character, something that I think every MMO participant can empathize with.
"The witness protection aspect of your characters is kind of dependent on your profile before you join the corporation. So in my case, my main would have undergone a witness defense, get a brand new name, wipe corp background, new portrait - those kinds of things. And to me, because my identity and my experience in EVE was tied up in that character, I had been contemplating maybe not even taking him off ice since I didn't want to change his title, his portrait. Because when you've played for so long with a particular character, you have connected with all these people through that avatar, your identities are linked to it. So being able to Buy EVE Echoes Items still be that character now when I am playing EVE is amazingly fantastic, and was much more significant to me than I had expected until just before I came to CCP and realized the implications of what could happen to this character."
